Kosovo's acting president, Albulena Haxhiu, has invited the European Union to send an observation mission for the extraordinary parliamentary elections scheduled for June 7.

In a letter addressed to the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, Haxhiu requested that the electoral process in Kosovo be monitored and evaluated through an independent mission.

"In accordance with constitutional responsibilities, I have issued a decision to set the date for early elections. Given the importance of this process, I invite the European Union, through an independent Observation Mission, to monitor and evaluate the conduct of the elections," Haxhiu said, according to the Presidency's announcement.

Haxhiu underlined that the presence of an EU observation mission would increase the transparency, credibility and integrity of the elections, in accordance with democratic standards and Kosovo's commitments to free and fair elections.

She also appreciated the EU's continued role in supporting democratic institutions in Kosovo, emphasizing that this invitation is a continuation of institutional practice and evidence of commitment to an open and credible electoral process.
