Political scientist Altin Gjeta has stated that, although the appointment of Kaja Kallas as head of European Union diplomacy and the involvement of diplomat Peter Sorensen in the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue process bring a new spirit, expectations for tangible results remain low.
"Kallas has shown a more positive approach towards Kosovo and has stated that the dialogue needs to be recalibrated, as it has not produced concrete results so far," Gjeta said in "Interaktiv".
According to him, despite good will, Kallas's scope for action remains limited due to the influence of the interests of EU member states.
According to Gjeta, the involvement of Peter Sorensen, a diplomat who knows the reality in Kosovo well, is an advantage, but it is not enough to radically change the course of the dialogue process.
"These two components bring new air to the dialogue, however, we must wait and see concretely how they will approach this process," he emphasized.
Gjeta stressed that it is impossible for the EU to abandon the agreements already signed between Kosovo and Serbia, due to the political investment it has made in them. He expects Brussels to focus more on reformatting the dialogue in procedural and diplomatic terms, rather than on content.
"If the EU aims to recover lost credibility in Pristina, it must take concrete steps – such as lifting sanctions against Kosovo – and no longer be perceived as an unbalanced mediator," Gjeta concluded.
Kallas is expected to visit Kosovo this week.
