Florjan Binaj is the independent candidate facing Orgerta Manastirliu in the November 9 local elections in Tirana. He has received the support of opposition parties.
At a press conference, DP leader Sali Berisha asked allies to support this candidate.
"I hope that allies, oppositionists, will unite in this support for a personality with a wide reputation, in whom the citizens of Tirana find themselves more than anyone else represented. He was, for years and years, the star or superstar of the most watched show in the country and in every role, his interpretation was the most popular, it was perfect. Florian Binaj is one of those artists who considers civic causes as his own," said Berisha, reports "Euronews Albania".
Tirana was led by Erion Veliaj of the Socialist Party until February this year – after winning three consecutive terms. But he was arrested in February on corruption charges involving at least 1.1 million euros in public funds. He is accused of giving public money to businesses that in return gave his family illegal profits. The prosecution has filed an indictment against him and the trial is expected to begin soon.
On September 23, the Tirana Municipal Council voted by a majority vote on the proposal to dismiss Mayor Erion Veliaj from office.
The Socialist and Democratic Parties have joined their votes, agreeing to remove Veliaj from office.

Prime Minister Edi Rama has announced that there will be early elections in Tirana. He has proposed Ogerta Manastirliu as the SP candidate.
A key figure in the ruling Socialist Party, Veliaj was arrested by SPAK in February of this year. He is accused of corruption involving at least 1.1 million euros in public funds, which were allegedly given to businesses that in turn provided his family with illicit profits.
