The exodus of Albanians during the war is commemorated

Traditionally, on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m., citizens of Kosovo will enter Kukës through the border, as a symbol to remember the exodus of Albanians.

Mustafa Kryeziu from the non-governmental organization "Exodus 99" said that the commemoration of the escape of Kosovo Albanians from the war is a very emotional moment, mentioning that this event should not be forgotten.

"It's mostly emotional for me because I have the events of that time in my head as I have told them. As an organization to leave a mark, we have built towers, obelisks and done various actions. 25 years from this we keep this day so as not to forget because as you know, if you forget, it is rewarded with bad things. As in every year, at 11:00 a.m. the border is crossed on foot as a sign of commemoration of those events", said Kryeziu for the show "TODAY" on KTV.

He emphasized that the activities started in the morning, and when the border is crossed, Kryeziu said that the Kosovar Albanians will welcome representatives of the Kukës community.

Kryeziu expressed his displeasure that no nationwide museum has been created for the exodus of Albanians.

In the period 1998-1999, about one million Albanians were forced by Serbian paramilitary forces to move to Albania and Macedonia.

In addition to those displaced in Albania and Macedonia, thousands of Albanians also crossed the border with Montenegro, while hundreds of thousands were displaced from their homes to find shelter in the mountains of Kosovo.

They were children, women and the elderly, violated, tortured and massacred. On every anniversary of the 1999 exodus, which took on biblical proportions, Kukës is commemorated, and in the last two years also symbolically because of the pandemic, this drama of suffering is one of the most terrible that the people of this land have experienced, wrote KP.

The exodus, or forcible expulsion of Albanians from their homes, culminated after the start of NATO bombing of military and police points in the former Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro).
