Ejupi: Businesses have less than 40 days left to find an operator, or they will be left without electricity

Burim Ejupi from the INDEP Institute has requested that the Energy Regulatory Office conduct investigations to identify those responsible for the fluctuation in the price of electricity in the country. While speaking about the energy situation, he said that in Kosovo, technical issues are currently becoming political, while political ones are turning into technical ones.

Regarding the entry of businesses into the open market, Ejupi said that businesses were unprepared for this decision. He added that they now have 40 days to find an operator, or face being left without power.

"There was no information here either. We are late in the steps... Today we are on the 24th, they have less than 40 days left if they do not sign a new contract. If this process had been well organized, this would not have become a problem," he said.

According to Ejupi, although the supply company KESCO has the right to purchase electricity from any operator, the lack of transparency and effective oversight raises major questions.

"KESCO has the right to buy electricity from whomever it wants, but someone should monitor how much it is buying. Until 2-3 years ago, ERO could have set the price it had for maybe 15 minutes, but there were no such large deviations. When it is known that the price of electricity in 2024 was cheaper than in 2023, the price of energy is falling. In the ERO report, it is noted that imports were 6 euros cheaper than in the previous year, technical losses were 5% lower, and our electricity is becoming 16.1% more expensive, plus the fact that the market is being liberalized," he said in "Interaktiv".

Ejupi insisted that ERO, through an investigation, can find out whether or not the electricity purchase process was regular.

"Investigations should be carried out by ERO. I wonder where the responsibility of KOSTT, KESCO lies, someone told KESCO to buy electricity from NOA, why didn't you buy it from other operators if you bought the electricity that we as citizens are now paying more for. In the end, maybe the investigation shows that everything is in order."
