100 new correctional officers graduate, Kurti: Kosovo needs them and expects a lot from them

Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti has awarded diplomas to 100 new cadets of the Kosovo Correctional Service, who graduated today, after 23 weeks of training.

In his speech, Kurti told the 100 new cadets that being a correctional officer is a great responsibility, which requires discipline, integrity and dedication to the safety, order and dignity of persons deprived of their liberty.

He said that Kosovo expects a lot from the 100 new Correctional Service officers, as he said that behind every recruitment lies a responsibility and behind every officer lies the trust of citizens and the support of institutions.

“Today, 100 young men and women are successfully completing their professional training and are moving forward with their new duties in the service of the state and the citizens of Kosovo. Being a correctional officer is a great responsibility that requires discipline, integrity and dedication to the security, order and dignity of persons deprived of their liberty. Kosovo needs you and expects a lot from you. In the last 3 years, around 400 correctional officers have been recruited. This is an important investment in strengthening human capacities and in building a modern, professional and stable correctional service. Behind every recruitment stands a responsibility, behind every uniform stands a duty and behind every officer stands the trust of citizens and the support of institutions. Kosovo is developing a correctional service that is increasingly gaining the appreciation and respect of international partners. Today, the Kosovo Correctional Service is a member of international organizations such as the European Organization for Correctional Services EUROPRIS and the International Correctional and Prison Association ICPA and is increasingly gaining the trust of all partners worldwide. Also present at this ceremony was the acting Minister of Justice, Donika Gërvalla, who said that the 100 new officials, after the training they received, are more than prepared to serve in a field where the state's responsibility is great.

“Today is a day when you are completing an important stage and starting a task that requires and expects a lot, perhaps much more than we who are outside the institution can imagine from those who exercise it. After 23 weeks of professional training at the Kosovo Academy for Public Safety, I am convinced that you are more than prepared to serve in a field where the responsibility of the state is particularly great because where human freedom is limited, the state has the obligation not only to guarantee order and security, but also to ensure that the law is applied fairly and human dignity is respected in all circumstances. The work of a correctional officer requires discipline, requires determination as much as it requires prudence, self-restraint and quick and fair judgment. You will face difficult situations, you will have to make decisions under pressure and exercise authority in circumstances in which the line between determination and excess must always be clear. This is where you will prove your professionalism. And, the Director General of the Correctional Service, Ismail Dibrani, said that the 100 new officers, starting today, are the ones who will guarantee security, order and discipline in correctional institutions.

Dibrani said that correctional officers must guarantee safety but also create opportunities for rehabilitation, reintegration, and change for persons entering a correctional institution.
