Bieber: The US position has not been confirmed by the State Department, silence in the EU is dangerous

Florian Bieber, professor of the Center for Southeast Studies at the University of Graz, has analyzed the latest developments between Kosovo and Serbia.

Commenting on the change in the US position on the idea of correcting the borders, Bieber says that the controversial messages do not come from the State Department, but from people close to President Donald Trump, reports Koha.net.

"It is, in a way, Trump's logic: The most important thing is to reach an agreement, while the content is not important," he explained to N1 television.

According to him, what is most dangerous is silence in the European Union. Only Angela Merkel expressed her opinion against the potential change of borders.

"It seems that the only goal of the EU is to remove this issue from the agenda, so it is not paying attention to the possible risks from this type of solution", he says.

Bieber expects that the negotiations on the possible agreement will last longer than the current mandate of the EU institutions.

"There are many uncertainties - how to separate some municipalities, for example, or how to mitigate the negative effects for other countries in the region. There will also be many objections to this solution", he says.

Asked about the upcoming meeting, on September 7, between Thaçi and Vučić in Brussels, Bieber expressed his concern about the ability of the High Representative of the EU, Federica Mogherini, to maintain the dialogue in this official format, since it is clear that there are direct negotiations going on in parallel.

"What worries me the most is the fact that no one talks about the Serbs who live in the municipalities with an Albanian majority in the Presheva Valley and those in southern Kosovo. "Vuçiqi and Thaçi are talking about the agreement between the two ethnic groups, but if we look at what is happening on the ground, this is completely different from the truth," says Bieber.
