Fatmir Sheholli arrested on suspicion of espionage

Acting Minister of Internal Affairs, Xhelal Sveçla, has announced that Fatmir Sheholli, suspected of espionage, has been arrested. His arrest took place in the Pristina region with the assistance of the Kosovo Intelligence Agency.

Sveçla wrote that he expects institutional treatment with great seriousness of this case, which, according to him, constitutes one of the most serious acts against the security and constitutional order of the Republic of Kosovo.

"Kosovo Police, in close cooperation with the KIA and the prosecution, arrested Fatmir Sheholli today, on well-founded suspicions of involvement in espionage. Individuals like this who have had unlimited media space in our country have collaborated with actors who work and act every day to undermine our Republic and its progress. We remain committed to protecting our country from all circles that do not hesitate to endanger it for any benefit of their own. The time of Serbia's spies in Kosovo is over. Anyone who works for Serbia and against Kosovo will be pursued without compromise and unstoppable. The Republic must be protected with the highest institutional and moral responsibility," he wrote.

In a press release, the Special Prosecution Office announced that Sheholli was arrested after several months of investigation and was taken into custody for 48 hours. Raids are also being conducted at the suspect's residence in order to secure other material evidence.

"The Kosovo Special Prosecution, in cooperation and coordination with the Kosovo Police, is undertaking all necessary investigative actions, in accordance with the Criminal Procedure Code and applicable laws, of which the public will be notified in due time," the Prosecution's announcement states.

Sheholli has been invited time and again on Kosovo television as a political analyst. He is the director of the Institute for the Affirmation of Interethnic Relations in Kosovo. He was also invited to testify by the Special Court.

In public appearances, he has claimed to have worked in the Serbian Security Service (UDB) and after the war was engaged in the Kosovo Intelligence Service (SHIK).

Fatmir Sheholli Letters

Fatmir Sheholli

A newspaper article "The farmer", published on March 15, 1991, shows that 44 Sheholli families from Podujevo and the surrounding area had publicly distanced themselves from Maliq Sheholli and his son Fatmir, who were accused of collaborating with the Serbian government of the time.

Today, October 9, 2025, Fatmir Sheholli was arrested by the Kosovo Police on suspicion of espionage.

"Because our distancing from Maliq Sheholli and his son Fatmir, made in 1990, published in the religious magazine 'Dituria Islame', is less well known to the public, we find it necessary to inform the Albanian-speaking public, everywhere in the world, that the extended Sheholli family (44 heads of household) always distances itself from the actions of these two: Maliq and Fatmir," the text published in the newspaper states.

The article further emphasized that, according to the statement, Maliqi and Fatmir "have been put at the service of the Serbian occupier and thus have committed the most evil human act: national treason."

"Regardless of their renegade actions, our all-people's movement will achieve national liberation. The stain of betrayal can never be removed from the renegades," the letter, which was sent to the editorial office of "Bujku", read at the end.

The signatories of this statement were dozens of members of the Sheholli family from Podujevo, including names such as Sahit, Bajram, Brahim, Hamit, Selman, Rrahman, Ismail, Fehmi, Rifat, Ramush, Faik, Gani, Agim and others.
