German Embassy on Vučić's statements: Germany supports Kosovo's sovereignty

The German Embassy in Kosovo, commenting on the statements of the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, on the territorial integrity of Kosovo, said that Germany remains committed to supporting Kosovo's sovereignty and its European integration.

Vučić said at a military ceremony that Kosovo is part of Serbia, while the military has a constitutional duty to protect the territorial integrity of Serbia.

"Germany has recognized Kosovo as an independent state since 2008 and remains committed to supporting Kosovo's sovereignty and its European integration," the German Embassy said in a response to KOHO, which asked for a comment regarding Vučić's statements. 

To make progress on the European path, the German Embassy's response states that Kosovo and Serbia must continue normalizing relations through dialogue. 

"We call on all actors to refrain from statements and actions that hinder the achievement of this objective. We reiterate our clear and unwavering position that there is no place in Europe for rhetoric, justification or promotion of ethnic cleansing," the response states.

Weeks ago, the minister in the Serbian government, Snezhana Paunovic, said that if she were in Milosevic's place, she would carry out ethnic cleansing in Kosovo.

This week, the European Union has also reiterated its call for restraint from inflammatory statements that do not help achieve the goal of normalizing relations between Kosovo and Serbia.

This was stated by an EU spokesperson on Wednesday in response to questions regarding Vučić's statements, which were criticized in Kosovo as a direct threat to Kosovo.

In their reactions, the EU has called for normalization to be achieved through dialogue, reminding once again that this normalization is a condition for advancement in the European integration process.

"Only through dialogue can progress be achieved in the normalization of relations between Kosovo and Serbia. Statements and actions that are inconsistent with this goal should be avoided," says an EU spokesperson in Brussels.

"Progress in the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina is a prerequisite for each side for their progress on the European path," the spokesperson further said.

The EU has previously criticized as unacceptable a statement by a Serbian government minister that she would carry out ethnic cleansing of Kosovo in the late 1990s.

The EU has consistently called on the parties, not only in Kosovo and Serbia, but throughout the region, to refrain from inflammatory statements, denial of war crimes or glorification of those responsible for these crimes, and to work towards a genuine normalization of relations between neighbors.
