The US Embassy on the opposition protest in Albania: Reject violence

In Albania, the United States embassy today called on opposition supporters to "reject violence in order to ensure a peaceful and constructive protest" in the protest called by it tomorrow in Tirana.

Tomorrow's opposition protest is the 12th since February when it left the parliament by giving up the mandates of its deputies. Violent clashes with the police have often been recorded in the protests organized in Tirana, which have also used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.

In its statement, the American embassy emphasizes that "over the past few months, most of the participants have exercised their right to protest peacefully. However, the moment a peaceful protest is tainted by an act of violence, even by an individual, the democratic purpose of the protest is compromised. It is illegal and undemocratic to commit acts of violence, including the destruction of property," the statement underlines.

The opposition demands the resignation of Prime Minister Edi Rama and the creation of a transitional government to prepare early elections, while it has warned that it will not allow the organization of local elections on June 30. For its part, the majority has reiterated that there will be no postponement of the local elections and that they will be held on the specified date./ Alsat/
