The Special Prosecution of the Republic of Kosovo has filed an indictment for the criminal offense of "War crimes against the civilian population", against NC, a guard at the Lipjan prison during the war.
According to the Prosecution's announcement, there is a well-founded suspicion that the defendant during the period 1998-1999, in her capacity as an official-guard at the Pristina Prison, the parallel prison for women in Lipjan, in complicity with other prison officials, violated the rules of international law during the armed conflict, namely wartime.
"According to the indictment, NC, throughout this period, systematically mistreated Albanian prisoners, threatening them with death and torturing them inhumanely with various means, such as rubber batons, kicks and punches, to the point of fainting, causing bodily injuries," the Prosecution's announcement states.
As a result of these beatings, the victims are said to have suffered psychological violence, a state of anxiety and fear, and their human dignity has been seriously violated.
The case has been transferred for review to the Special Department of the Basic Court in Pristina.
