The citizens of North Macedonia will go to the polls on Wednesday to elect the president of the state. Of the seven candidates, there are also two Albanian political blocs in the race: Bujar Osmani and Arben Taravari.
Nine Albanian political parties are registered in North Macedonia, but they have already decided to participate in the elections in one of the two political blocs of the ruling and opposition parties. The European Front and the VLEN coalition are the two blocs that will compete not only in the presidential elections, but also in the parliamentary ones on May 8.
For the first time in the pre-election coalition "European Front", with the DUI in support of Osmani, Menduh Thaçi's PDSH and Zijadin Sela's Alliance for Albanians have also been included.
Meanwhile, Taravari, who was dismissed from the party after joining the VLEN coalition, has the support of the Besa Movement, the Democratic Movement and the Alternative Party.
Taravari and the VLEN coalition have also been supported in the campaign by Prime Minister Albin Kurti and by exponents of the Vetëvendosje Movement. The opposition in Pristina and the European Front in Skopje, which has Osmani as its candidate for president, have criticized this involvement of Kosovo's rulers in the elections in North Macedonia.
The race is centered on the main Macedonian candidates, who have different views on the path to the EU.
Stevo Pendarovski aims for a second term and says that the state should change the Constitution, in accordance with the request for EU membership.
"After more than three decades of independence, I am convinced that Macedonian citizens can understand very well whose program is real and who is in step with the times in which we live", said Pendarovski.
Against the constitutional changes is VMRO-DPMNE, which has Gordana Siljanovska Davkova as its candidate.
"A new phase of reforms will start and for this we really need smart, hardworking, dedicated and honest people", she said.
Stevco Jakimovski, who is on the US blacklist, is also on the list of presidential candidates.
To be elected president of North Macedonia, the candidate must secure at least 50 percent of the votes. If this is not achieved, the second round between the two with the most votes will take place on May 8, the day when the parliamentary elections will also be held.
Albanian political parties so far in all election cycles, whether local, parliamentary or presidential, have participated alone, without any pre-election coalition between them and this has in some cases also led to a decrease in the number of deputies due to the distribution of votes .
In the Assembly of North Macedonia, they have 29 deputies out of 120 that the legislative institution counts.
